Emergency Food Supplies
When disaster strikes, what will you do? There are three necessities: food, water, and shelter. While it’s true that emergency survival kits tend to provide a few days sustenance, what will you do if the nation is in a state of emergency for a week—a month—a year?
Inflation will happen, that’s what. The struggle to find food supplies will be difficult, to say the least. That’s why you need to be prepared.
There are several options for gathering emergency food supplies: purchased preserved rations, canned goods with long expiration dates, starting your own garden or farm, or preserving food.
Many companies sell food rations and water purification systems. These will be the difference between life and death, guaranteed, if you don’t have your own supply.
If you decide to start your own foundation of food, start with a garden and include items like potatoes, carrots, corn, and beans. These will provide as much sustenance as possible off of greenery (beans have protein). If you are able to have livestock, chickens are the way to go. They breed quickly and also provide dairy, so you have options. Goats are a great larger option if you have the room, and pigs are handy yes if you don’t mind the mess. Some people are even able to create their own pond and put quick breeding fish inside.
When you pick canned-goods or packaged goods for the pantry, make sure to get beans. That’s important! Beans have protein. Also get rice.
For food dehydration, fruits are the easiest way to go on the quick (check out our Dehydrating Fruits for Preserving Recipe page). You should also make beef jerky. Dehydrate the beef without seasoning, use salt, and it can last quite a while. It can last a very, very long time.
